At an early point in his comedy career, Mohammed Amer wondered if the world was ready for what he had to say. With the response he has gotten from 16 countries spanning across five continents, he now knows the answer. Julian Hall, of “The Independent”, UK, compared Amer’s excitement for comedy to that of Eddie Murphy, going on to call him the comic that completes the “Allah Made Me Funny” line-up. With audiences ranging from ten thousand anxious fans to a friend sitting across from him at a coffee shop, Mohammed Amer believes that the world is a stage. He uses his unique gift to promote understanding between the Muslim community and the non-Muslim peoples of the world.

Born in Kuwait, Mohammed had to flee his birth country at the age of nine during the Gulf War. His family settled in Houston, Texas, USA. At age fourteen, Mo (as he’s more popularly known) participated in and had leading roles in high school theatre, often doing solo performances as a Stand- Up comedian. A short few years after, he targeted The Comedy Showcase, Houston, TX, as the best guided comedy room. Here, Mo flourished and perfected his art and his message that laughter crosses all boundaries.

When only nineteen, Mo was the first Arab American refugee to perform overseas for U.S. and coalition troops. In 2004, he was one of twelve selected nationally to perform at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival. The honor of being the first comedian to perform at the American University of Cairo belongs to Mo.

Out of all of his accomplishments, Mohammed is most grateful for the opportunity to tour with “Allah Made Me Funny, Which was made into a motion picture and released in theatres across the nation on Oct. 3rd. 2008 entitled Allah made me funny – Live in concert. Brian Logan of the Guardian, UK, says, “There is also goodwill and generosity of spirit in the show“further says, “Mohammed Amer, challenges those stereotypes simply by being big and cuddly.” “Amer has shades of a burly Lee Evans about him.”

“Mohammed himself says, “My biggest intention when starting standup was to take the hardships of being a stateless refugee and share it with the world by simply being hilarious.” In further efforts to accomplish this goal, Mohammed has begun production on his one-man show “Legally Homeless. The show debuted in front of 5000 fans at Olympic Square in Sydney, Australia. A world tour of his one-man show entitled Legally Homeless is currently in the works to debut in London June 7th thru the 14th.

In addition to his one-man show, Mo is also the co-creator of a short film entitled “Ask A Muslim.” Regardless of the current and future platforms, Mohammed Amer’s mission is clear: to enlighten and dismiss negative stereotypes of Muslims and Arabs through humor.

“Vaguely reminiscent of the comedian Sinbad (but funnier),” Ty Burr, Boston Globe
